Where is the fiscal restraint?

We have two words for the Town Council.

New laptops?

Recently, the Town Council voted to purchase seven new laptop computers for each of its seven members at a cost of $10,612. According to the Town Council, the computers are necessary so board members wouldn’t have to worry about discussing town business via e-mail on their personal computers, just in case someone decided to exercise their right to view public documents under the Right to Know law. The councilors fear that their personal information could be in jeopardy if their computers were confiscated. But, any fifth-grader can tell you that there’s something called the World Wide Web, and e-mail services are available free of charge with a click of the computer keyboard.

Councilor Paul Roy seems to have been the only person who kept the taxpayers’ interest in mind as the six remaining voted to spend $10,612 on new laptops.

But that’s not all! At the same meeting, the Town Council voted to remodel the Bedford Meeting Room, located at BCTV Studios, for $15,000. This expense, councilors said, would be paid out of Comcast cable fees, not tax dollars.

The Bedford Meeting Room looks fine to us. It’s about time Bedford stopped trying to “put on airs,” as Bedford Taxpayers Association President Roy Stewart said.

And we agree. Let’s focus on what we absolutely need.

We also want to know what happened to those candidates who were voted into office, this year and in years past, pledging to control spending.
