Nordic event plows into Hopkinton again

HOPKINTON – The Hopkinton Rotary Club is sponsoring multiple Nordic ski races for all age groups at the ninth annual Hopkinton Rotary Nordic Event at the Hopkinton Fairgrounds on Saturday, Feb. 5.

The initial race will be the 5-kilometer high-school competition at 10:45 a.m. The Philip B. Cole cup for men and the Tom Walton Cup for women will be awarded to the winning high school teams.

Following the NHIAA-sanctioned high school competition will be citizen freestyle races for all ages. These include a 5K open for men and women, with prizes for multiple age-category winners, including youth, 10-13; junior, 14-19; open, 20-39; masters, 40-49; and seniors, 50 and older.

A 2.5K race will follow for the 5- to 9-year-old Bantam age group, as well as novices of all ages. Finally, a 4x1K relay will conclude the day. This fun relay encourages all skiers to make up their own teams for a good-time race. Prizes will be awarded to the top age groups.

Event fees are $10, $5 for those 19 and younger. High school teams pay $5 for each racer up to a team maximum of $50 per team. The entrance fee entitles you to your event plus the relay.

A snack bar, staffed by Hopkinton High School members of the Rotary Interact Club, will be open in the Odd Fellows Lodge adjacent to the Fair Grounds on Routes 103 and 127 in Contoocook. Parking is available there.

Race fees and proceeds from the raffle will benefit local charities and causes supported by the Hopkinton Rotary Club.
