CONCORD – A New Boston
man was indicted on the federal
charge of transporting child pornography
across state lines.
Richard Hawes, 63, was
arraigned on June 24 at the
United States District Court in
Concord.
Hawes was led into the courtroom
in handcuffs and leg
restraints by a U's. Marshal. He
stood quietly while Magistrate
Judge James R. Muirhead read
the charge.
Hawes pleaded innocent to the
charge.
He was arrested after a clerk at
the CVS on South Willow Street
found explicit pictures at a selfserve
digital photography kiosk
on May 24.
Detectives Scott Fuller
and James Flanagan of the
Manchester Police Department
arrested Hawes at the Friendly
Beaver Campground in New
Boston, where he resides for
part of the year.
The detectives made five allegations,
stating that “the defendant
did knowingly possess or
control a visual representation
of a child engaging in sexual
activity.”
Hawes became the center of
national attention after pictures
of his granddaughter were shown
on “Good Morning America” in
an effort by law enforcement to
identify her.
He allegedly took photographs
of the 2-year-old girl after he
gave her a bath. Hawes was
visiting his son in Florida during
March of 2005.
Hawes is currently in the custody
of the U's Marshals, who
are holding him on $200,000
bail.
