AVS harriers hurry to finish

AUBURN – Auburn Village School’s cross country team took part in two end-of year championship meets recently.

At the Tri-County Junior High School Championships in Pelham on Oct. 16, the team of five sixth-grade runners took ninth place in their division on a 2.1-mile course.

Meggie Donovan captured first place among 156 runners with a time of 14 minutes, 56 seconds, leading her team of Katie Donovan, Taylor Leonard, Jen McLean and Alexis Grouly.

The team of Stephanie Dollard, Samantha Gonzales, Elena Kalioral, Rilee Jordan, Ashlyn Egan, Laura DiPietro and Lauren Thayer represented AVS in the seventh- and eighth-grade race of 216 female runners.

The AVS boys seventh- and eighth-grade team included Chris Brunelli, Jeff Sowa, John Squires and Nick Boulanger.

On Oct. 23, AVS placed three runners in the top 20 of their respective events at the New Hampshire Junior High State Championships at Londonderry High School.

Meggie Donovan covered the two-mile, three-loop course in a time of 12:52 to finish third in her grade division. Leonard, McLean, Brittany Gordon and Grouly completed the sixth-grade team.

In the boys’ seventh- and eighth-grade race, Brunelli placed fifth out of 284 runners with a time of 11:58. Other members of the boys seventh- and eighth-grade team at the state championship were Sowa, Squires and Boulanger.

In the girls’ seventh- and eighth-grade race, which included 242 competitors, Dollard, Gonzales, Kelsey Douville, DiPietro, Egan, Jordan, Thayer and Kalioral competed for AVS.

Coach Patricia Wood said she was very pleased with everyone’s individual performance and improvement throughout the season, and she’s looking forward to next year.
