Hooksett lacrosse program continues to grow

HOOKSETT – As Hooksett’s youth lacrosse program continues to grow, big things could once again be on the horizon.

Depending on the number of young athletes who register to play Hooksett lacrosse this spring, board member Jack Mudge said an expansion in the number of teams could be in order.

“Looking at the steps the program has taken up to this year, we’re bringing more people in and getting more parents involved,” Mudge said. “This will be our third season and we want to step things up to another level.”

Last year, the program had approximately 70 lax players, allowing for three teams: an under-11 team with 8- to 11-year-olds; a U-13 team that finished second in the state; and a U-15 team which welcomed high school-aged athletes.

Although Mudge couldn’t commit to an estimated number of athletes anticipated to partake in the 2005 season, he said the board has a few ideas in store should enough children sign up to play the sport.

“We’re looking to have an under-11 girls team if there’s enough interest,” Mudge said. “If we can field enough girls, we’ll do it. It’s just a matter of getting enough kids.”

An introduction to the game
Mudge said the program would also like to introduce a division for children who are 9 years old and younger. Essentially, this new division would serve as an introductory program – the lacrosse equivalent of tee ball.

None of the equipment necessary to compete at older age levels would be needed, Mudge added.

“We’ll use a soft ball and an introductory lacrosse stick,” he said. “There’s no hitting. We just want parents and kids at young ages to get exposed to it.”

Mudge also stressed the board’s desire to attract athletes from surrounding towns such as Allenstown, Auburn, Candia and Pembroke that don’t have established lacrosse programs.

Although the first night for registration was scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 19, Mudge said two additional evenings of sign-ups will take place. Boys, girls and parents are encouraged to stop by the Cawley Middle School cafeteria on Wednesday, Jan. 26, and Wednesday, Feb. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m.

“HYAA (Hooksett Youth Athletic Association) has allowed us to use the Donati football fields for the spring season,” Mudge said. “We’re going to have games under the lights and concession stands will be open. It’s going to be neat. The kids and parents should really like it.”
