The Derryfield School girls basketball team has been crushing opponents in Class S. As the postseason draws near, the Cougars are fighting for the top spot in the division.
At 15-1, DS is battling preseason favorite Sunapee for the No. 1 seed. The two teams were scheduled to meet on Wednesday, Feb. 9, with the locals looking to avenge their only loss of the season. They’ve won 14 straight since.
Derryfield 71 – Portsmouth Christian 39
DS traveled to Portsmouth and easily handled the 13-win Eagles, who were missing two starters. Still, the hosts raced to an early 10-5 lead.
After a quick timeout, the Cougars went on a 17-0 run and took a 29-18 lead into the break.
Stacie Foote saw her first action of the season late in the half.
Kendra Decelle was the game’s high scorer with 17 points. More importantly, she also had five assists and no turnovers.
Rachel Romanowsky contributed 12 points and grabbed six rebounds. Annie Jenney and Tory Starr each scored eight points, while Stephanie Foote and Stacie Foote each added six.
Kathleen Reynolds grabbed six rebounds. Katt Bolduc and Stephanie Foote each collared five caroms.
Derryfield 80 – Nute 20
Nute, struggling before they lost three starters to season-ending injuries recently, was overwhelmed by the Cougars, who led 34-4 at the break and coasted.
Romanowsky scored 12 points in the half on her way to a 16-point night. Stacie Foote added nine in just five minutes of action. All 12 DS players scored.
Reynolds and Stacie Foote each pulled down seven rebounds.
Decelle had four steals and four assists. She also scored 15 points, leaving Decelle with 997 for her career.
Only two girls have scored 1,000 points in DS basketball history; the last was Mya Mangawang on Feb. 6, 1990.
