Winter playoffs produce neighborhood champion

Below is a postseason roundup of the basketball and hockey teams that competed in NHIAA winter tournaments. All results are through Sunday, March 13.

Boys hoops
In Class L boys basketball, No. 3 Manchester Central won its first-round game against No. 14 Nashua South, 63-34, advancing to the quarterfinals at the University of New Hampshire.

No. 10 Manchester Memorial traveled to seventh-seeded Londonderry for its tourney opener. The Crusaders closed their season 8-11 after dropping a 69-45 decision to the Lancers.

Trinity of Manchester, seeded 12th, pulled off a first-round upset, besting No. 5 Pinkerton Academy of Derry on the road, 66-65. The victory earned the Pioneers a trip to UNH for the quarterfinals against No. 4 Dover.

No. 16 Manchester West met top-seeded, two-time defending state champion Merrimack in the first-round. The Blue Knights battled, but lost, 71-51, to close their campaign at 6-13.

In the Class I boys basketball tournament, Pembroke Academy entered the tourney as the No. 15 seed. Traveling to Hollis/Brookline, the Spartans were defeated, 66-42, finishing their season with a mark of 8- 11.

Bishop Brady of Concord earned the 16th and final seed in the tourney. The Giants played Pelham in their opener and lost, 74-59. BB finished its campaign, 8-11.

The Derryfield School of Manchester took the 10th seed in the Class S boys tourney. In the first round, DS lost to No. 7 Woodsville, 68-49, finishing its year at 8-11.

Mount Zion of Bedford was the 11th seed in Class S. The Lions lost to No. 6 Colebrook, 84-66, and finished the year at 8-11.

Girls hoops
In Class L girls hoops, Trinity won its first-ever state championship, defeating No. 8 Dover, 56-48, at Southern New Hampshire University.

Trinity’s ladies advanced to the state title game after beating No. 15 Alvirne, 63-42, No. 7 Salem, 50-41, and No. 3 Merrimack, 72-66.

Sixth-seeded Bishop Guertin of Nashua advanced to SNHU for the quarterfinals after it defeated No. 11 West in the first round, 65-42.

West finished the year with a mark of 9-10, while BG completed its campaign 14-6 after a 62-55 loss to Merrimack in the quarterfinals.

In the Class I girls basketball tournament, No. 13 Pembroke Academy traveled to fourthseeded Kearsarge for a firstround matchup and lost, 38-28. PA completed its season with a 8-11 record.

Bishop Brady, the No. 15 seed, faced Oyster River in its opener. BB lost, 49-33, ending the year at 8-11.

The top-ranked Derryfield girls advanced to the program’s first Class S title game since 2000 before losing to No. 2 Sunapee, 57-37.

DS made it to the final round with wins against No. 16 Nashua Christian Academy, 69- 12, No. 8 Lin-Wood, 51-33, and No. 4 Pittsfield, 53-46. DS finished its year 20-2.

Hockey
After a first-round bye in the Division I hockey tournament, fourth-seeded BG lost to No. 5 Pinkerton in the quarterfinals, 4- 2, ending the year at 12-4-1.

No. 7 Memorial survived No. 10 St. Thomas Aquinas, 5-4, in its opener. But the Crusaders couldn’t advance past No. 2 Salem in the quarterfinals, losing, 3-2. Memorial’s final record was 12-8.

No. 8 Trinity lost to sixthseeded Berlin, 6-1. THS finished the year 8-9-2.
