Allenstown Police chief quits
By Nicholas Brown Allenstown selectmen recently accepted a short resignation letter from Police Chief Jim McGonigle, who’s the subject of an ongoing investigation by the state Attorney General’s office. Selectmen accepted the resignation on Monday, April 10, the same day Concord’s city council accepted McGonigle’s resignation from an at-large council seat. The resignations came as McGonigle is being investigated by the attorney general’s office, said Charles Keefe, assistant attorney general in the criminal bureau. Keefe declined to specify the nature of the investigation, but said, “it’s been going on for some time now.” Keefe said multiple search warrants have been obtained and executed through the investigation, but findings of searches have been sealed by the court. In his resignation to the Concord City Council, McGonigle cited health reasons. McGonigle, a Concord resident, joined the council in 1993, resigned in 2001, and became an at-large councilor in 2003. Upon McGonigle’s request, selectmen placed him on paid leave from his Allenstown post on Feb. 28. Selectmen then hired state police to oversee the department for two days, said Allenstown Town Administrator Kelley Collins. The department has since been headed by Allenstown Police Capt. Shaun Mulholland.
