Maynard W. Smith
GOFFSTOWN – Maynard W. Smith, 93, formerly of Shirley Park, Goffstown, died Aug. 13, 2008. He was born in Manchester on Feb. 8, 1915, to Walter Benjamin and Augusta Knoetig Smith. Mr. Smith graduated from Central High School and pursued post-secondary studies in accounting. He served in World War II in the Hqs and Hqs Squadron IX Fighter Command, earning a Good Conduct Medal and European African Middle Eastern Theatre Ribbon as a staff sergeant. He was stationed overseas in Egypt, Libya, Air Offensive Europe, Tunisia, Sicily, Foggia, Normandy, France, Ardennes and the Rhineland. Mr. Smith worked for 50 years at Public Service of New Hampshire in the rates and load research department. He was active in the community, serving as treasurer of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church for 27 years and president of the Goffstown PTA, and he was an active follower of Goffstown High School and Little League sports. He was a member of the Bible Lodge No. 27 Free & Accepted Masons. He was also active in boys summer camping and Boy Scouts. His passions were gardening, snorkeling, canoeing, telling jokes, traveling to distant lands and his family, church and neighbors. He was predeceased by his wife of 61 years, Natalie Gilmore Smith, in 2006. Family members include four children, Joan A. (Smith) Stevens of Goffstown; Jeffrey A. Smith of Long Beach, Calif.; Gregory W. Smith of Denver; and W. Bradford Smith of Bedford; 10 grandchildren, Jenn (Stevens) Skinner and Amy Stevens; Benjamin and Michael Smith; Jesse, Aaron, Joshua and Caroline Smith; and Trevor and Gavin Smith; and a niece, Linda A. (Gilmore) Monahan. Memorial donations may be made to St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church.
Harry M. Bartholomew
AUBURN – Harry M. “Bart” Bartholomew, 91, died Aug. 17, 2008, at his home. He was born Jan. 19, 1917, in Auburn, to Ella Bartholomew. Mr. Bartholomew was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II in the South Pacific Theater. He was a resident of the Manchester area for 58 years. He worked for New England Telephone for 34 years and was a member of the Pioneers. He belonged to Henry J. Sweeney American Legion Post No. 2. He was predeceased by his wife, Thelma M. “Penny” Bartholomew, in 1988. Family members include his daughter, Marcia L. Trombly; three grandsons, James J. Trombly Jr., Thomas M. Trombly and Frank A. Trombly; six great-grandchildren; and two cousins, Ann Dollard and her husband, Don, and Gail Towne and her husband, William. A graveside service takes place at Pine Grove Cemetery in Manchester on Thursday, Aug. 21, at 10 a.m. Please meet at the main gate. The Rev. Lillian J. Warner will officiate. Sean Michael Powers
HOPKINTON – Officer Sean Michael Powers, 24, died Aug. 14, 2008. He was born in Boston on March 29, 1984, to Peter W. Powers Sr. and Marilyn T. Powers (Donahue) of Hillsborough. After graduating from Hillsboro- Deering High School in 2002, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served two tours in Iraq, one as a platoon sergeant for the 10th Marines stationed out of Camp Lejeune, N.C. He returned home to New Hampshire and worked with Asplundh Tree Experts. Mr. Powers joined the Hopkinton Police Department in April 2008. He will be missed greatly by family, friends and his community. Mr. Powers is the grandson of Pearl V. Donahue of West Quincy and Pauline Powers of Wareham, Mass., and the godson of Aunt Bea and Uncle Jack. Family members include four brothers, Peter Powers Jr. and his wife, Elissa (Tenhave), of Newbury, twins Scott and Daniel, and David; newborn nephews Evan Williams and Owen Lucas, born Aug. 14, 2008; and girlfriend Amanda Schalk of Salem. Scott H. St. Pierre
GOFFSTOWN – Scott H. St. Pierre, 74, formerly of Goffstown, died Aug. 13, 2008, at his home. He was born in Goffstown on Nov. 18, 1933, to Pierre Henry and Doris B. (Eastman) St. Pierre. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He married Alice St. Pierre in 1953, and together they raised six children. He enjoyed playing pool and was a member of the pool team at the Winona Social Club. He was predeceased by a son, Jeffrey St. Pierre. Family members include five children, Karen, Kevin, Alan, Eric and Brenda; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Margaret Senia Lanzillotti
NEW BOSTON – Mrs. Margaret (Immaculata) Lanzillotti, 93, of Lynn, Mass., died peacefully in her son’s home in New Boston. She was the beloved wife of the late Bartolomeo Robert Lanzillotti. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Serafina (Izzo) Senia and Albert Peter Senia of Brooklyn, N.Y. She attended Hunter College in Brooklyn, NY. Mrs. Lanzillotti, belovedly called Nani by her family, loved her family, reading, sewing, gardening, home-making and cooking in the traditional Italian ways. She was also predeceased by her brother, Louis Senia; her sister, Louise Fusco; a son, Albert Lanzillotti; and granddaughters Julie Lanzillotti and Donna Pardo. Family members include her sister, Lillian, and her husband, Anthony Succurto of Trumbull, Conn.; two sons, Peter B. Lanzillotti of Lynn, Mass. and Louis B. Lanzillotti and his wife Mary of New Boston; a daughter-in-law, Yvette Lanzillotti; grandchildren R. Anthony Lanzillotti and his wife, Maureen, of Wakefield, Mass., Albert P. Lanzillotti II and his wife, Maria, of Lynnfield, Mass., and Louis Bartholomew Lanzillotti II of New Boston; and her great-grandchildren, Sarah Lanzillotti of Stoneham, Mass., Craig Lanzillotti of Wakefield, Mass., Arianna Lanzillotti of Lynnfield, Mass., and Michael Lanzillotti of Lynnfield, Mass. Susan E. Van Duyne
BEDFORD – Susan E. Van Duyne, 65, of Somers, Conn., and formerly of Bedford, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, at the Evergreen health Care Center after a lengthy but strong battle with cancer. She was born in Rochester, N.Y., daughter of the late J. Ralph and Eleanor (Cropley) Van Duyne, who also lived in Bedford for a time. She graduated from West High School in 1961 and Keene State College in 1965, where she taught at the regional high school for three years before moving to Connecticut. She lived in Somers, Conn., since 1982 and had been employed for 29 years as a senior software architect for Aetna Insurance Co.’s mainframe database systems in Hartford, Conn. Besides her husband, William F. O’Donnell, family members include two brothers, Donald Van Duyne and his wife, Rosamond, of Bedford, and Peter Van Duyne and Terrie Perrine of Dedham, Maine; and a nephew, John Van Duyne, his wife, Kerri, and their 4-year-old daughter, Marisa, of Hawaii. Helen Frances Cummings
GOFFSTOWN – Helen Frances Cummings, 93, died Aug. 15, 2008, at Hillsborough County Nursing Home following a long illness. She was born in Melrose, Mass., to James Norris and Agnes Mahaffe. She lived many years in Melrose, Mass., and attended Melrose-Wakefield High School, where she earned awards for her writing. She moved to New Hampshire in 1963. She worked many years for the Mary E. Hunt Home in Nashua. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially cooking for them. She was an avid reader and also enjoyed gardening and animals. She was predeceased by two sons, Terry Lee Costello and Alan Robert Cummings. Family members include one son, James W. Costello of West Brookfield, Mass.; two daughters, Jacqueline Decie of Malden, Mass., and Charlene Coleman of Manchester; 16 grandchildren; 10 great-grand children; four greatgreat- grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Betty B. McGrath
GOFFSTOWN – Betty B. McGrath, 73, died Aug. 15, 2008, after a lengthy illness surrounded by her family. Born in New York City, she was the daughter of John G. and Mary R. (Scott) Brandt. Mrs. McGrath was a resident of Londonderry for the past four years. She previously resided in Goffstown. She had been employed for several years as a registered psychiatric nurse. Mrs. McGrath was a member of the first class of women graduating from Rutgers University. She was a member of the board for the Merrimack Youth Association, where she served as director of cheerleading. Members of the family include four children, Mary Elizabeth McGrath of Manchester; James Timothy McGrath of Providence, R.I.; Carolynn M. Herman of Londonderry; and Robert John McGrath of Londonderry; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two nieces and one nephew. Visitation takes place Thursday, Aug. 21, from 10 to 11 a.m., at French & Rising Funeral Home in Goffstown. A memorial service follows at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Sarah White
HOOKSETT – Sarah “Pat” (Mullen) White, 96, of 41 Welkin Ring, died Aug. 17, 2008, at Epsom Healthcare Center. She was born in Manchester on Aug. 1, 1912, to James and Sarah (Keough) Mullen and was a resident of Hooksett since 1970. A graduate of Manchester West High School and Keene Teacher’s College, she taught second grade in the Manchester school system for 25 years. She was an avid square, round and ballroom dancer. She belonged to the Granite State Cloggers and enjoyed golf and bowling. She once appeared at the Palace Theatre with Jack Smart. She was a member of Hooksett-ites, Manchester Woman’s Club and Manchester Retired Educators Association. Both she and her husband shared the position of past president of the Heel and Toe Square Dance Club. She was often seen walking near her home or dancing with friends. She loved entertaining the family. She was a communicant of St. Catherine Church in Manchester. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald E. White Sr., in 1990. Family members include two sons, Donald E. White Jr. and Richard F. White, both of New Hampshire; a daughter, Kathleen (White) Cody of Florida; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Other family members include her daughter-in-law, Janet White of New Hampshire, and her son-inlaw, Kenneth Cody of Florida. Calling hours are Thursday, Aug. 21, from 8 to 10 a.m., at Phaneuf Funeral Home in Manchester. A Mass of Christian burial takes place at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine Church in Manchester. Burial follows at Westlawn Cemetery in Goffstown. Arrangements are under the direction of Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium in Manchester.
